The Ardeche Gorges are frequently described as the ‘Grand Canyon of Europe’ and for anyone lucky enough to experience first hand the natural splendor of the Limestone Cliffs and the beautiful, warm and welcoming river that runs through them it is clear to see why.
The Gorges are a terrific monument to Mother Nature; from Vallon Pont D’Arc to St Martin the river meanders gracefully from bend to bend as it winds through the many twists and turns within the natural gorges. Pont D’Arc is an arch 60 meters wide and 45 meters high and was carved by the river erosion over thousands of years. It is a famous landmark and a place of such beauty that canoeing through it is a memory certain to stay with you for years.
The Ardeche is a region alive with history; cave paintings found within the surrounding mountains date the region as one that has been inhabited for at least 31,000 years!
Wine is one of the Ardeche’s main exports and the Côtes du Rhône vines supply the region with some of its finest. Luckily our location is near several wonderful vineyards, with wine tasting a must. Very rarely does the price exceed five euros a bottle - and that’s for a high quality wine, so a couple of these are sure to make their way into your luggage!
The local French markets provide a fantastic
opportunity to sample some of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes
of the Ardeche, as well as to meet the locals. Walking from stall
to stall the scent of soap, spice, cheese, olives, fresh baked bread
and rotisserie chicken will greet your nose. The market traders
are proud of their products offering a sample to help you decide. |
